Dying to Live My Beautiful Life

I sometimes feel we rush through life grasping to capture future happiness in exchange for the good life we already own. We chase what might or might not be for what already is. Could it be we are dying to live that beautiful life?

I recently had a hospice medical doctor on the radio show who challenges each of us to consider the possibility many of our most “noble” desires to attain success are surreptitiously leading us right over the cliff to death.

Karen Wyatt, MD researched this notion by collecting a review of her many patients on deaths door, asking them what lessons mattered to them the most. In retrospect, what did they wish they had done or not done to live an everyday existence overflowing with peace, joy and personal fulfillment? These real life experiences were threaded together by these seven rules and how to accomplish each on a daily basis:

1. Suffering – embrace your difficulties.
2. Love – let your heart be broken.
3. Forgiveness – hold no resentments.
4. Paradise – dwell in the present moment.
5. Purpose – manifest your highest potential.
6. Surrender – let go of expectations.
7. Impermanence – face your fear.

So are you dying to live your beautiful life? Are you buying the lies of counterfeit happiness in exchange for the genuine gifts you have yet to unwrap? Is the value of your precious life worth considering a change in values and/or priorities?

Turning An Upside Down World, Right-Side Up

Green Sky and Blue Grass is a blog about turning an upside down world, right-side up.

To start the blog, here is a poem by William Blake-

Ah Sunflower

Ah Sunflower, weary of time,
Who countest the steps of the sun;
Seeking after that sweet golden clime
Where the traveller’s journey is done;

Where the Youth pined away with desire,
And the pale virgin shrouded in snow,
Arise from their graves, and aspire
Where my Sunflower wishes to go!

William Blake

Awareness: Do You Know Who YOU Are? 3 Quick Questions

You must be self aware.

Do YOU Know YOU?

Aristotle stated “The unexamined life is not worth living,” hundreds of years ago. I have found it not only remains a modern day nicety – it’s downright dangerous to not examine and know who you truly are.

Do you really know you?

What if I told you that you were the eagle in this story? OK, I am. So open your mind, and read with patient reflection what I’m trying to show you. [Read more...]

The Best Year of Your Life!

Get 2011 Right-Side-Up!

New Years.

That wonderful time of the year where the world seems to embrace you in universal encouragement to make a fresh start. Believe, dream big dreams, set goals your heart aches to achieve.

“Research shows that making resolutions is useful. People who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t explicitly make resolutions.”

What’s the Benefit of Attaining Your Resolution?

What impact do you hope to inspire in those you love and work with in the months ahead? Who do you desire to become in the best version of yourself? What do feel like, look like? How does attaining your quest help others attain theirs?

Write it Down - Make it Happen

Studies indicate you are significantly more likely to succeed achieving your goals when you write them down. That being said, every January, I do exactly that. Creating categories to help me grow into full bloom, looks something like this:

Goals: Full Life – Full Year

1. Learn - A course, certification, seminar, or degree I aspire to achieve.

2. Retreat – A place scheduled to set my spirit alone for deep reflection.

3. Travel - A new place I desire to see, with new people to meet.

4. Volunteer – A contribution to help others just for the sake of doing it.

5. Body – A goal to schedule an activity to help me be fit and healthy.

6. Love - A desire to connect with family and friends in a deeper way.

7. Work - A new height for my business growth to make a positive impact.

8. Financial – A vision for abundance to support my dreams.

9. Spirit – An activity which helps me gratefully live in the present moment.

Of course, there’s always those subcategories for things like, “finish clearing out the stuff in the cellar.” I find most of these under the umbrella of the big picture goal to: get more organized.

10. Clear the Clutter - Where I live, work, and in my head!

A study in Psychology Today reports 3 Key components to help you succeed in keeping your New Years Resolution to completion.

1. Be Honest with Yourself.

2. Be Specific

3. Create a Support System

Take some time to reflect in a quiet place, where you can be freely inspired. You will feel the inner tug to expand your whole soul in a variety of ways which energize passion and purpose in your spirit. Promise!

The practical element to all of this goal setting stuff, is not only having determination, but some type of tracking and accountability system in place. You want to be able to measure and celebrate your progress, which fuels more forward momentum. This is a critical ingredient you can’t ignore.

Be Kind

“A  study at the University of California indicates kind acts improve overall health and the feeling of well-being due to the release of dopamine (the “feel good” neurotransmitter) in the brain, resulting in a natural high.”

Being kind to yourself and others, is the glue to make all your other goals stick secure.

New Habits – New Results – New Feelings

“With insights from positive psychology going back to William James’s 19th century essay Habits and continuing through recent research on will power, motivation, and goals, we can greatly increase the probability of successfully improving specific habits.”

When you set yourself up for implementing these new habits, you are automatically planting seeds for new results, which will then produce the new feelings of success associated with achieving your resolutions and goals.

Connect and associate your new habit with something else that you find pleasant to keep you motivated.

You’re Amazing

Happy New Year in Every Language

Remember whatever your goals are for this year, make sure to include enjoying your own company, regardless of results. You need to be your own best friend in every day, before you can expect anyone else to do the same.

The Best Year of Your Life begins now, with this very moment. Enjoy the journey of discovering the amazing you!

Happy New Year!

“We will open the book. Its pages are blank.
We are going to put words on them ourselves.
The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.”
Edith Lovejoy Pierce

5 Tips to Keep Your Peace

Get Me Out of Here!

Are your days hectic, busy, and filled with unexpected obstacles to overcome? Do you feel like you need a break from the stress? Good news! You’re not alone in feeling the chaos, and now you won’t be alone in learning new ways to keep your peace.

Imagine you are an Olympic athlete walking on a balancing beam. You are deep in focus to perform your task perfectly on a three inch wide beam. You have practiced this move more times than you can count, and your confidence is strong. You begin your jump with focused momentum, when suddenly a loud distracting noise goes off in the stadium. The event surprises you, and captures your attention just long enough to cause you to lose a bit of your footing. You’ve trained tirelessly, and with anticipated interception to overcome an error in your landing, you quickly regain your balance to complete the move with majestic success. Congratulations! The applause from the crowd is only surpassed by the joy beaming out of your heart.

"I adjust my Balance Easily."

Maintaining your inner peace is a lot like that balancing act. You need to accept the unexpected is part of the process, and train yourself to successfully overcome the inevitable obstacles when they occur. You need to have the tools readily accessible to combat the confusion.

Here are 5 Terrific Tips to Keep Your Peace.

1. “What can I learn from this?”

One of the best ways to detach yourself from the emotional turmoil is to seek the solution in the problem. The gift of more peace may be wrapped in disguise. Is someone always criticizing you for never doing “it” good enough? Consider this as an opportunity to set better boundaries from negative people in your life. You may be able to learn how to practice letting go of this toxic personality in your life, which will help you avoid more of the same poisionous brand in the future. Always interrupt the disturbance with this thought, “What can I learn from this?”

2. Calling my rescue team!

Get into this habit, and practice it often. Ask for help from your spiritual rescue team. It doesn’t do you any good to have a million dollars in the bank if you don’t know it’s there, and you can’t enjoy the benefits of spiritual strength if you don’t ask your spiritual support team for assistance. Put the breaks on a chaotic encounter, or emotional disturbance, with a silent prayer for protection. God, your angels, the saints, family members who have passed on, they are all in your corner cheering you on to overcome any obstacle. Knowing you have a heaven sent support system at any moment you need, is a fail-safe security system. “Help!” is always a good start.

3. “What is my emotional temperature?”

Implement a new way of thinking which recognizes what comes out of someone else’s mouth is not necessarily the truth about you. The other person’s action igniting a reaction in you, is a good indicator of something YOU need to get healed. Consider the feeling of stress a temperature reading of your spiritual health. Are you way above normal? Feeling the fumes? Too hot to handle? Realize this awareness is a gift. Salt only hurts on an open wound, and if something hurts, that something in you needs to be healed. Awareness is key. A wound once healed is stronger than before, and the same came be true for you.

4. Practice Successful Sabotage

Set yourself up for success when the unavoidable storms hit you in the face. Hurricane winds may pass by you by, but they don’t have to uproot you if your deeply dug into solid ground. Sabotaging yourself for success is taking premeditated action to win the war against the battlefield of the mind. If you know your boss is going to be unreasonable during the day, make sure you have effective mind vitamins to counteract the negativity. Positive affirmations, favorite quotes, images which bring you peace, anything you know makes you feel happy and empowered should be strategically placed and readily available at your fingertips. Surround yourself with the fragrance of success. Breath in your ability to overcome any adversity. You are a champion!

5. Look for the humor in the horror.

Studies show laughter releases endorphins, which makes you feel good. Seeking solutions with a sense of humor will help you detach from the negative feelings, and open your mind to fresh choices. Sometimes the catastrophe can be the cure. If you have been seeking more quiet time alone, the fact your car broke down right after you ran out of gas, could be a unexpected opportunity to sit in silence while you wait for the tow truck. You can’t hear the kids screaming now! Laughter is a great medicine without any side effects. “Don’t take life too seriously, you’ll never get out alive.” Ebbert Hubbard.

The key to keeping your peace is having a solid, readily available, armamentarium to fight the peace killers successfully. Understanding you can’t stop the negative events, but you can stop their accompanying negative feelings from contaminating you further, is part of your winning equation.

Begin now. You’re worth the effort!

Finding Your Way to Happiness

Happy Mind Vitamins 4 You!

What are you feeding your mind today?  Did you take your happy mind vitamins yet?  Remember, you are what you eat!

Take your Happiness Mind Vitamins Now

Take Hold of Happiness

Research shows your mind does not distinguish between the reality of a situation you experience, and the visualizing of an experience you create. Your mind considers both events as real, and therefore ignites the cascade of response accordingly. First, your thoughts, then your feelings created by the thoughts, and then a behavior as a consequence of the thoughts and feelings.
If this is true, then you should be able to increase your good feelings at a mathematical rate proportional to the good thoughts you input into your mind.

Thoughts -> Feelings -> Actions

Good News For You
Let’s take this principal one step further, and consider the opportunity to “rewrite” the script in your mind.
Perhaps you get a consistent bad feeling every time you pay your bills on line . It feels nearly impossible for you to create a good feeling from a bad feeling producing behavior – paying your bills (who really enjoys paying their bills?). This may be true for you.

ReWrite Your Brain

Did you know you can insert a good thought, which produces a good feeling into the displeasure action, which can help overwrite the feeling you experience from that displeasure task? You can!

Make Yourself Smile Now

For example, you could play a positive blog talk radio interview in the background on your computer, while you are paying those bills. Listening to the happy mind vitamins from the radio show, while you are doing the negative task at hand, offers your mind the opportunity to focus on the new information you are feeding it to process. I like to call this effort, “successful sabotage” because you are deliberately sabotaging yourself for success.

The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste

Your mind is capable of numerous tasks simultaneously. Just because you haven’t experienced success in changing your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to date, doesn’t mean your mind can’t achieve the goal with tremendous success. Don’t believe me?
Click Here to listen to my recent interview get-happy with People Coach, Elizabeth Lengyel. It’s free! Download and recycle the happy mind vitamins again and again, as needed. The positive results are limitless!

Stand next to manure and smell like manure.

Stand next to perfume, and smell fragrant too.

Be careful what and who you surround yourself with, because without any effort from you, the effect automatically rubs off onto YOU. Surrounding yourself with positive affirmations, knowledge, and ideas, will faithfully generate the same.

Free Mind Vitamins

I love utilizing blog talk radio as one of my happy mind vitamins tools in my armamentarium of building a solid happy life. Real life resources are available on demand, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week at no charge! How great is that?! The only cost to you and me, is the time it takes to set your reminder, or follow a show Viola!

The Happiness Quiz: Which One of These are YOU?

The Happiness Quiz: Which one of these are you?

That’s the topic of a recent pollI posted on my Linkedin Community. The overall results, and the breakdown in; age, gender, and job titles were amazing.

Sharing is caring, so here’s the quiz – (perhaps you want to take it now before read the rest of the story?!)

Which one of the following most reduces your ability to be happy?

  • Problem People in my life.
  • Other.
  • Negative &/or Distorted Thinking.
  • My Health.
  • Not enough money.

Here’s the overall results:

Happiness Quiz - Overall Results

“Experts attribute about 50% of a person’s happiness to genetic endowments and another 10% to circumstances – where we live, how much money we make, how healthy we are.”

Good News! This means you have 40% of your own happiness within your control!

The first step toward achieving any new action is awareness. Once you are aware of what may be catalyzing your unhappiness, you can accept it, and inject a new response to create a new result.

Let’s take a look at the Happiness Quiz Breakdown:

By Age:

Happiness Quz - By Age

By Gender:

Happiness Quiz - By Gender

By Job Title:

By Job Function:

and last but not least..

By Company Size :

Happiness Quiz - Company Size

Do these results surprise you?  The fact most people found thier distorded thinking the primary happiness obstacle VS  how much money they had, was amazing.

Money can’t buy you happiness. In fact, the pursuit to make a lot of may be stealing your happiness!

Psycholigist conducted a study on this topic using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Check out this extremely telling information:

“Men making more than $100,000 per year spend 19.9 percent of their time on passive leisure, compared to 34.7 percent for men making less than $20,000. ”

“Women making more than $100,000 spend 19.6 percent of their time on passive leisure, compared with 33.5 percent of those making less than $20,000.”

“Wealthy people, it seems, spend so much time chasing the money that they don’t have enough time left to use in a way that makes them happy. People with lower incomes spend more time enjoying themselves.”

So don’t believe the lie you can’t be happy in these tough economic times.  Most of your happiness depends on the moods your thoughts create-  not the amount of money you have to make.

Scientist report “even small improvements in mood can have positive cascading effects.” These seemingly simple strategies, promise powerful lasting results.

The take-a-way;  your commitment to being consistent and persistent using your happiness tools, is the golden key to unlocking your happiness door.

“Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” Aristotle

Here are some tips to turn the insanity of unhappiness into the clarity of powerful happy producing habits:

  • 1. Accept ‘You don’t know what you don’t know.”If you don’t know every piece of information on planet earth – you have a reciprocal amount of ideas which you have the opportunity to learn, to help you be happy. That’s a lot of information!
  • 2. Practice “Successful Sabotage”If self-sabotage is setting yourself up for failure, successful sabotage can be setting yourself up for success! Strategically placing positive affirmations, photo’s, or even trinkets, in places where you will be forced to stumble upon them throughout your day, can ignite a positive cascade in your head. Consistency conquers
  • 3. Be a “2 Minute Volunteer” You can’t give what you don’t have, and you can’t have, what you’re not willing to give away. Why not share your favorite affirmation on a sticky note – in your bills, to the people you work with, attach it to your email’s? It’s not the amount of physical time you take to volunteer, it’s the sincerity in your heart with which you give the love away, which matters.

You spend more time with YOU than anyone else. If you can’t enjoy your own company, how do you expect anyone else to?!

Your self-talk is built by your thoughts. Apparently we each have 50,000 thoughts per day. (Who is it that measures these things!) Unfortunately for many the vast majority of those 50,000 are repetitive, negative thoughts – focused on the things you should have done, things that went wrong, how you aren’t good enough, the list goes on.”

Remember, each one of these conversations you’re having with yourself in your head, is being reinforced and recorded in your memory. Not only the thought, but the accompanying positive or negative feeling it ignites – again and again!

You have a choice. Dedicate yourself to implementing strategies which help you win the battle in your mind. Recruit a solid strong army of amazing positive change agents in your head, and dump the junk those negative demolition demons seek to repeat.

Don’t let your happiness come from other people’s minds. Get involved in the direction and quality of your life this very moment. If fact, CONGRATULATIONS! by reading this article  you’ve already begun.

Remember – You’re Worth the Effort!

Detox Your Mind!

Detox Your Mind – Why and How Now

You may have heard of Recovery Rehabilitation Centers to detoxify your body from addictive drugs, or Medical Centers which provide everything from colon to kidney cleanses for your body, but have you considered the possibility of priceless benefits by detoxifying your mind of negative thoughts?Yes! It’s possible for you to do! Read on how…

Your Mind is Alive!

Negative thoughts are alive. You may not be able to touch them in a boxed package, but each one generates an electrical impulse which develops an imprint in your mind which produces an emotion. These emotions either make you feel happy, or unhappy. It’s a simple as that.

You many not be able to control when negative thoughts enter your brain, but you absolutely have the power to open the door and invite them in to stay, or shut the door and tell them good riddance goodbye.

Like any illness, when diagnosed early, recovery of a good prognosis statistically increases. The same is true for you to feel better. Dump the junk of negative thoughts as soon as they sweep your mind, and block the negative feelings that come with them. How?

Take Positive Mind Vitamins Daily

The most effective way to get rid of a negative thought is to acknowledge it exists.Face it head on. It may seem upside down and un-natural that in order to remove the thought, you must literally embrace it, but nothing could be more right side up true!

You’re only as sick as your secrets, and bringing the thought into the light of awareness is like taking a vicious vampire into the power of the sun,
automatically burns the evil away in the brightness of the day.

Dr. Carolyn Leaf has done extensive scientific research on the physical changes toxic thoughts create in your body. “The chemicals that accompany those toxic thoughts course through your body in a myriad of toxic chain reactions. These toxic thoughts can even look distorted compared to healthy thoughts – chemicals released can change the shape and even destroy part of the neurons, causing change right down to the cellular level.” Imagine that, right down to your cellar level!

->Thoughts -> <-Feelings -> <-Behavior<-

The most effective way to detoxify your mind is to embrace your negative thought,
and let it go as fast as you can.

Remember, your feelings aren’t facts, so be sure to challenge each one. Critique how much power you give each thought. Is it a truth, illusion, or just a habit you have formed based on prior experiences?

Replace and transform old norms with
new dreams you seek to achieve.

Surround yourself in positive transformation tools. Seek out the people, places, and things which help you grow a strong healthy mind, able to withstand the storms of negative winds.

Take your positive mind vitamins daily. Detoxify your thoughts and cleanse the fear. Dare to Discover the Amazing Happy YOU!
