Gratefulness; A GREAT Person is FULL of GRATITUDE

Great People are Grateful People.
As Featured in WE Magazine for Women!

I firmly believe the greatest people I have ever met in my life, are always the most grateful.

Does this describe you?

The grateful person undoubtedly possess one or all of the following qualities I deeply admire: peace, humility and happiness.

A Grateful Person is a Happy and Healthy Person

Research by Dr. Robert Emmons at UC Davis showed adults, youth, children, and even those with medical disabilities benefited in a variety of of ways both mentally and physically from practicing gratitude activities.

Summary of Findings

  • In an experimental comparison, those who kept gratitude journals on a weekly basis exercised more regularly, reported fewer physical symptoms, felt better about their lives as a whole, and were more optimistic about the upcoming week compared to those who recorded hassles or neutral life events (Emmons & McCullough, 2003).
  • A related benefit was observed in the realm of personal goal attainment: Participants who kept gratitude lists were more likely to have made progress toward important personal goals (academic, interpersonal and health-based) over a two-month period compared to subjects in the other experimental conditions.
  • A daily gratitude intervention (self-guided exercises) with young adults resulted in higher reported levels of the positive states of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, attentiveness and energy compared to a focus on hassles or a downward social comparison (ways in which participants thought they were better off than others). There was no difference in levels of unpleasant emotions reported in the three groups.
  • Participants in the daily gratitude condition were more likely to report having helped someone with a personal problem or having offered emotional support to another, relative to the hassles or social comparison condition.
  • In a sample of adults with neuromuscular disease, a 21-day gratitude intervention resulted in greater amounts of high energy positive moods, a greater sense of feeling connected to others, more optimistic ratings of one’s life, and better sleep duration and sleep quality, relative to a control group.
  • Children who practice grateful thinking have more positive attitudes toward school and their families (Froh, Sefick, & Emmons, 2008).

The good news is emotional resilience is not limited to your genetic make up – you CAN improve your attitude and overall well being by taking an active role in reflecting on the many things you can be grateful for.

My Gratitude List Begins with...

What can YOU be grateful for today?

1. Did you get up in a warm house this morning?

It is estimated by the National Alliance to End Homelessness that 2.3 and 3.5 million people experience homelessness in America.

2. Did you have running water to brush your teeth?

The World Commission on Water for the 21st Century, says three billion of the world’s population lives in squalor and misery without access to proper sanitation or clean water.

3. Can you read, write, hear, or speak?

Helen Keller could not read, write, hear or speak – yet she became one of the greatest thought leaders of our time, making the whole world a better place.

Once asked what was worse than being blind, Ms. Keller answered “Being able to see, but not having any vision.”

4. Do you have 2 arms to write and 2 legs to walk?

There are many Wounded Warriors coming home this Thanksgiving and Christmas without limbs protecting the freedom for you and me.

Nick Vujicic has something to say to you about Life without Limbs.

I’ve had the pleasure now to interview over 100 experts and celebrities on The Best People We Know Radio Show - and it never fails – the really great ones are always the most humble and grateful for every blessing they have had the privilege to experience. They are passionate about helping other people be happy.

How grateful are you? Take the Gratitude Quiz.

Count your blessings not your burdens.

“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.” Cicero

Your Best Holiday Ever!!

Memories most Treasured are the Moments which Matter most.
(As Featured in the December Issue of the Best Ever You Magazine)

My Best Holiday Ever!

Busy moms, non-stop active kids, family commitments and a to do list that seems to have a never-ending life of its own.

“Are you kidding? How do I create the best holiday ever with all this going on?”

First, take a moment to define what will truly create your best holiday ever? Is it in the activities or the feelings created during the activity? Is it the material gift, or the eternal memory which it inspires? Is it in the doing, or the being?

The Recipe for Happy Holidays:

1. Create a Family Tradition.

Creating a special family tradition where each person contributes in some special manner is a great way to make any holiday unforgettable. “Family traditions are important in every individual because it strengthens the connections between each member and it bridges the gaps between them.”

It can be a signature dish you cook together, a gratitude tree you decorate reflecting what each person appreciates most about the other, certain prayers you say before your holiday meal, music you enjoy, or even doing errands together in preparation for the celebration itself.

The point is to have fun, create smiles, and an atmosphere where you all feel the love, love, love!

2. Help someone else have a Happy Holiday.

The irony in volunteering is the person you help most is most assuredly yourself!

Helping out at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter probably quickly come to mind, but what about volunteering to watch another family’s child so parents can get some alone time, walking a neighbors dog, visiting the old age home and dropping off some home baked cookies, or keeping socks and food certificates in your car to give to a homeless person you might see going by?

No time to travel in your volunteer effort? How about writing a letter to a Holiday Hero who is away from his/her family this season. The American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes is a great place to start.

3. Watch an Inspirational Movie together and discuss what you experienced.

Stories and movies are a powerful catalyst for introspective emotion because we see ourselves in the characters and their story as we watch.

Find a movie which inspires reflection on priorities which you value- love, integrity, respect, or simple appreciation for being alive.

One of my favorite Christmas movies is the 1946 Classic, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life” with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. It highlights the paradox of what we want vs what we need, and the revelation that often being aware that we may already have it, is the most profound gift of all. George Bailey thought his life was not worth living triggered by a major financial crisis. What he learned by seeing life without him in it, was that he truly did have a ‘Wonderful Life.”

How great would it be to start a family discussion of your favorite scene, message, or quote which especially touched your heart? Al little popcorn and a lot of conversation can be an inexpensive event with a priceless memory.

4. Share Gratitude Prayers together.

I have never met a humble or grateful, unhappy person. Sharing prayers of gratitude for the blessings you have in your life, and praying for those who don’t, keeps you fully in the present moment.

Not only will you feel better when you reflect on the many blessings in your life and family, but scientific studies show “Children who practice grateful thinking have more positive attitudes toward school and their families (Froh, Sefick, & Emmons, 2008).”

I have begun to make a conscious daily effort to capture how many things I can be grateful for in my day from sun up to sun down. From waking up in the morning and being grateful that I had a bed to sleep in with a roof over my head, to the heat in my house, and the water that is running for a hot shower, to every meal I am privileged to eat. Why do I keep it so basic? Because there are many people without a home, heat, running water or food. My two legs that walk are a blessing I can’t allow myself to take for granted, as I reflect there is a soldier coming home who does not have his legs anymore.

From A – Z, or using each letter in your name, there is a way you can start your gratitude list and pray for those who don’t have what you already enjoy. Your gratitude list is somebody else’s best wish list.

5. Give one another the Gift of Time.

In this electric speed information age where everything is instantly available, it is easy to forget the material world is not the real world. In fact, the things we all want most can’t be purchased or touched with the hand, but only felt in the heart: Love, appreciation, respect, happiness.

Why not wrap up a box with the gift of time. An intention to get an ice cream together, visit a museum, go ice skating next weekend, finger paint, or finally make that trip to that ‘somewhere’ you planned for ‘someday.’ You can even volunteer to help an animal by adopting a pet for a day – check out Pets 911 for more information on how to make this happen.

The Gift is In the Moment.

Get a new way of thinking about the most valuable gift you can ever give: yourself.

Try one or all of these tips, and discover if they don’t help you have your best holiday ever.

Have an idea? Sharing is caring!

Angel sprinkles and blessings to you and yours for the happiest holiday ever.

Distorted Thinking Styles: Do You Wear One of These?

Your passion for fashion may be an attractive attribute in creating your personal style, but distorted thinking is a trend which needs to end now.
Do you suffer from distorted thinking?
What are the effects it is having on you?
Most important, how do you get rid of it if you have it?

Is Your View of You Distorted?

The conversations you have in your head are the most important meetings you will ever attend. Everything you say to yourself on the inside, is what you eventually express and manifest on the outside.
If you attract who you are, you must be very careful about what thoughts you allow to remain in your mind. Kill them before they have time to take root to grow a negative behavior.  Early diagnosis always accompanies a more positive prognosis.
Do you ever hear yourself saying something like:
  • “If my husband really cared about my happiness, he would take on more responsibility with the house and kids.”
  • “I feel like such a failure, I’ll never achieve my dream.”
  • “If I didn’t grow up in such a dysfunctional family, I wouldn’t be depressed.”
Good News! You are not alone if any of these examples sound vaguely familiar.  Little nasty voices of self-talk in your head, can be replaced.  You have the power!

Self-Talk can be Transformed

You are only as sick as your secrets, so being aware this conversation exists, is the first step towards getting rid of it.
“The authors of the Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook note that this type of thinking is characterized by ‘repetitive and intrusive thoughts that are unrealistic, unproductive, and often anxiety producing.”
You may have had a belief system which functioned to keep you safe in “survival mode” when you were younger, but this formula is not a winning equation towards healthy living in your adulthood. In fact, it is destroying and blocking you from claiming your hearts desires! Get rid of it!

I Can Do This!

You need to be programmed positive in the present. Accept and understand the negative programming you got in the past, which you need to remove today, is not your fault you caught.  Reinforce by your family situations or societal expectations, you can rise above your problem thinking.
What are the effects of these negative thoughts? Self-doubt, fears, or even phobias. None of these are good, and this is just the short list!
OK – you don’t want to feel this negativity, which means you have to get rid of the thoughts which create them, so your behavior can change for the better.
The Fabulous Four Cure for Distorted Thinking:
1. Identify the negative emotion you are feeling
2. Identify the situation which triggered this emotion
3. Identify the distorted thought
4. Create the opposite emotion in the same situation with a kind thought.
3 I’s (Identify) + 1 C (Create) = The New Amazing Happy Me!

Happiness Island, Peace Beach, Serenity Sand

Let’s take one of the examples provided, and apply this cure for distorted thinking.  This will help you begin the transformation in becoming the magnificent happy person you were created to be.
“If I didn’t grow up in such a dysfunctional family, I wouldn’t be depressed.”
1. I am feeling angry, resentful, tense and stressed.
2. My daughter/son just told me I was a terrible mother/father because I wouldn’t let him/her stay out past midnight.
3. Because my child told me I was a terrible parent in that specific situation, I feel like my entire life of being a parent is a failure, which makes me feel even more depressed. This feeling reinforces the belief I have no hope of change because this feeling comes from my horrible childhood, which I can never go back to the past to make better.
4. There are many people who have had worse pasts than me, who are happy productive people today, living in healthy relationship with their families. I can be happier today because these past experiences have given me more compassion, better discernment, and deeper experience to make better choices in the present. These better choices I make, give me power to create the life I want. I am no longer a victim to other peoples behavior!
Practice this process with events and emotions which are easy to identify.  Like anything else, when repeated with practice, the more easy the process will become to apply in more complex situations.

Your New Theme Song!

Surround yourself in transformation. Associate with people who are seeking to accomplish the same change as you, and you will experience your positive results more quickly and efficiently.
Positive energy is a fragrance worth wearing everyday, for any and all occasions in your life.
No thought is ever final, no feeling an absolute fact. It’s all a process.
Your personal passion for positive fashion, never felt so fun!

Get more Love in Your Life!

Who doesn’t want more Love in their life? Don’t you want to feel happy, cherished, and treasured? Loving the Love!

Here’s a simple and short equation for how to get more love in your life.

You are how you see!

You Are How You See!

Your eyes are the gateway to your mind, which is the gateway to your thoughts, which is the gateway to creating your feelings, which is the gateway to producing your actions, which is the gateway to creating the person called you. You are your actions!

If your eyes are designed in the shape of love, everything you see will automatically sculpture the image to fit your frame. You see the world as you are, not as it is.

Are your eyes designed to look for the shape of love?

What do you do when you want to see more clearly? You get a pair of glasses to magnify what you want to see, which you can not see on your own power. The glasses become an extension of you, doing for you what you can not do for yourself. No shame in that!

Grab your love glasses and magnify the love you seek to see,
and watch the entire landscape come into
crystal clear view for you!

Exercise-

  • Write down one person and one situation you want to see more lovingly.
  • Now, write down what “more loving” looks and feels like for you on a separate piece of paper.
  • Find a photo which magnifies the feeling of these words (magazine to stick figure works!)
  • Post this image where you will see it at least two times in a day. Bathroom mirror, car dash, coffee pot, the front of the fridge.
  • Start feeling the love!

Here’s what you just did.

You identified a problem and made a decision to change how you feel when you look at it. Then you clearly told yourself what the new feeling of love would look and feel like. Next, you sealed the new deal by taking action, to “successful sabotage” your mind to magnify the positive picture and erase the negative.

The Eyes of LOVE

Your mind will automatically seek ways to achieve the result it is being reinforced to view. You are going to get more of the love you see, the way you want to be.

If you want more love in your life, give yourself the gift through tapping into your eyes alive. You are what you see.

Clear the Fear! How to Get Rid of Fear & Anxiety

Fear in the past is resentment. Fear in the present is anger. Fear in the future is worry.

Fears Erased Daily Here!

Do you have a fear you want to clear out of your life? Good! Because fear is part of an upside down green sky world, which doesn’t serve you towards living your most happy, purposeful best today.

Fear is based in a lack of control, helplessness, victim mentality. When you feed fear, you starve peace. Fear is always accompanied by anxiety, confusion, and lack of hope.

Fear does not contain any faith. Faith evaporates fear, because faith knows a Higher Power, God, Universe (whatever is working for you in this moment) is a greater source which loves and cares for you unconditionally. When you know you are being loved, watched over, and protected, you automatically feel more safe, empowered, and inspired.

Think of when you were a child. Did you worry about where your next meal would be coming from? Stress out over having clothes to wear? Did you worry about what you even looked like? No. You lived in the present moment, and trusted the adults, your parents, were supplying the necessities you needed without even realizing you wanted them.

Fearless Recipies

The cure for worry then, is rooted in faith. So how then, do you get more faith?

Famous Clear the Fear Recipie:

1. Identify a time in your past when you worried.
2. List what you worried might happen.
3. Write down what actually did happen.

If you’re like me, many of the negative outcomes you thought would happen, never did. And if they did happen, you still survived. This leads to the grand finale step of them all.

4. Are you still alive to talk about it?

You see, if you have overcome the worst case scenario fear based result, regardless of how severe the fear, you have survived. If you have survived, you have overcome the worst result possible: death. Even then, many would argue death is not the worst event in your life.

Fear is false, because it is something which hasn’t happened yet. It is a feeling, and feelings are not factual, they just occur as a result of a thought.

Feelings –> Thoughts –> Behaviors;
and the circle continues in an endless cycle of infinity.

If you want to get rid of a fear, face it head on with faith. Prove to yourself your faith is alive, by reminding yourself of factual past events where your fears never came to appear.

Remember, you have been divinely watched over to make it this far in your life, with and without all these obstacles you still survived. The Divine is on your side!

Fear can’t survive where faith is alive.

No Fear Here!

Finding Jewels in the Crown of Your Life

Who doesn’t love jewels?

Jewels are precious and valuable finds everywhere on planet earth, and in the midst of chaos or confusion, jewels sparkle regardless of any condition in the day.

What Jewels are in YOUR Crown?

What are your jewels, your treasures, the people, places, and things you value? Want to know who you most authentically are? Look at what, and who you value in your life.  You are whowhat you associate with.

How can this help you be happier? If you know what matters to you most, you can compare and contrasts the life you lead accordingly.

If you value peace, do you associate with people who promote peace? If you value fidelity, do you associate with people who do the same? If you value honesty, do you have friends who live an honest life?

You see, the people you associate with screams like a banner large in the sky about who you most genuinely desire to be, and most truthfully live to be.

The Diamond of YOU!

There can be no confusion in what you are, with you who you associate with. It is critical you think about what you are thinking about. It is equally as important you discern who you associate with, and why.

The people who surround the circle of your life, tell you and the world you live in, who you are, what you value, and what you desire to become. The values who make you the person you are.

If you tell someone you love them, but hit them in the face, the words are a lie.

Actions are the only thermometer you can use
to measure the truth of a situation.

If you want to be truly “happy” you have to be at peace with the values you hold dear, and the desires of your heart. There can be no truth in lies. You must accept what you do speaks louder than what you say.

The most precious jewelers in your life are the one’s you treasure most. Only you can decide who they are.

Every person you accept into your circle of friends is either bringing you closer towards that goal, or away from it. Each person is a jewel in the crown of your life, but only you can decide what that crown will look like.

Your are a jewel. Who wants you in the crown of their life?

What Jewel are YOU?

No, both legs are different for a reason, and you don’t argue with your feet as you walk to where you want to go. You accept that the differences in each leg assists you in getting to your desired location.

You need all elements of your passions, dreams, and inspirations to help you move towards your greatness.

GFMG Your Way to Happiness!

(As seen in Power Women Magazine; by Deb Scott)

I have often said there needs to be a 12 step program for everyone.

A way to live with more self-awareness, detachment, acceptance and peace. A place of resourceful strength able to effectively kill those negative liar voices, the ones who seek to steal the precious positive real estate in your head.

Join the Party!

How and why do the 12 step programs help achieve your happy dream?

Imagine the steps are more simply broken down into four quadrants, or four pieces in a larger pie, or strong spokes in a wheel.

GFMG:

>The first set of 3 steps are about; Giving up
>The second set of 3 steps are about; Fessing up
>The third set of 3 steps are about; Making up
>The last set of 3 are about; Growing up

When we give up control of any situation, we are open to consider things we don’t know.

Once we are open to new ideas, we can see our part in any given circumstance, and focus on the only thing we have any control over anyway, and that would be us.

Once we are open and aware, we naturally want to heal any wounds by making up with the gift of forgiveness. Forgiving ourselves, and the other person, whether they deserve it or not.

Eventually, the process naturally helps us grow up and live life, on life’s terms. We stop the never-ending battle of wishing things were different, and accept things are what they are, grateful we did the best we could at the time with the information we had.

Gratitude for having learned valuable wisdom for the present moment and unwritten future.

It’s all a process.

The 12 Steps:

1. We admitted we were powerless over (insert your problem) —that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. We’re entirely ready to have God remove our shortcomings.

7. Humbly asked him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood him, praying only for knowledge of his will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all of our affairs.

Trees don’t grow twenty feet overnight, and neither does anything in the diamond of a person known as “you.”

GFMG is a winning equation you can always use to never lose!

CONGRATULATIONS! You're On Your Way Today!
